Transferring (porting) moves a number you already have to LimePhone, so your customers keep calling the number they know.
Which numbers can be transferred
You can transfer US and Canadian local numbers yourself from the dashboard. Transfers need a paid plan; they aren't available during the free trial.
For toll-free numbers, UK numbers or numbers in other countries, email [email protected] before you start. We'll tell you whether we can take it.
Before you start
Don't cancel your current service. A cancelled number is released by your current provider and can't be transferred. Your number keeps working with your current provider the whole time, so keep that account active and paid until the transfer is complete.
What you need
- The account details with your current provider: the name on the account and the account number (it's on your bill, and isn't your phone number). If your provider uses an account PIN, the form asks for it.
- The service address on that account, exactly as it appears on the bill.
- A bill from the last 60 days showing the account name, the account number and the numbers you're transferring.
- A signed letter of authorisation (LOA), signed by the person you name in the Authorisation step. You upload it with the bill. If you need an LOA form, email [email protected].
The name and address must match your current provider's records exactly. A mismatch is the most common reason a transfer is turned down.
Start the transfer
- Go to Settings → Phone numbers.
- Choose Port an existing number.
- Follow the steps: eligibility, account, address, authorisation and paperwork.
- Review and send.
How long it takes
Transfers usually take 7–14 days. Your current provider confirms the date, so treat any date as provisional until they do.
If it's turned down
The usual reasons:
- the name or address doesn't match your current provider's records,
- the account number or PIN is wrong,
- there's an outstanding balance or a pending order on the account.
Correct the details and send it again.
After the transfer
- Set who answers the number. See Call forwarding.
- Make a test call.
- Then cancel your old service.
Sending texts from a US number needs carrier registration, even after a transfer. See Trust center, 10DLC and compliance.
